Keep Your Child Reading At The Mary Jacobs Library

Do you want to keep your child reading great books all summer long? Join the Mary Jacob’s Summer Reading Club! This year’s theme is Catch the Reading Bug and we will have you spinning! Children of all ages can earn prizes by tracking their reading time and by coming to the library for special programs and games.

Research has shown that, during the summer months, school aged children can experience a decline in their reading skills. Valuable time is spent each fall regaining skills and fluency. The solution is simple. Encourage your child to read by signing up for the reading club beginning June 16. You must register in person.

For more information about this or any of our programs, visit us at 64 Washington Street (route 518) in Rocky Hill, call us at 609-924-7073 ext 5 or check out our website at http://www.somerset.lib.nj.us.

Opportunity to Meet the ‘People Down the River’

Much has been made of the history of Montgomery and Rocky Hill since 1688 when Somerset County was formed and we became a township known as Western Precinct. But surely there were signs of life in this area before that? Well, Unami Indians, ‘the people down the river’, a subdivision of the Lenni Lenape, inhabited these lands from 6000 B.C. to the time of European settlement. Did you know that there were Indian villages on the Sourland Mountain and even on Route 518?

If you would like to take a journey back in time and discover the original Indian inhabitants who once lived in our towns, join us on Thursday, September 18 at 7:30 pm. Jim Wade, archaeology archivist and field archaeologist, will uncover the hidden presence of the Indians who once hunted, fished, and gathered wild plants throughout the Central New Jersey region and maybe in your own backyard.

Wade has extensively researched 17th and 18th century New Jersey land deeds of the Delaware-Lenape Indians and has documented the forced migration of the Indians westward from New Jersey and north to Canada. He has worked on several Indian excavation sites throughout New Jersey. You will be able to see and touch actual Indian artifacts.

This adult program, free and open to the public, will be held at the Mary Jacobs Library, 64 Washington St., Rocky Hill. Please pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 ext 4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org.

Introduction to Gmail

This computer class will provide an introduction to email, using Google’s free email service, Gmail. Each person will set up a Gmail account and learn how to use it. This is a basic course but you must know how to type, how to use the mouse, and how to get onto the Internet.

The class will be on Wednesday, September 24 at 1 pm at the Mary Jacobs Library. Please pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 ext 4 or emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org (of course, if you can email me, you may not need this class.)

Alaska with the Armchair Traveler

After a summer hiatus, the Armchair Traveler series is resuming in September at the Mary Jacobs Library with a driving trip to Alaska.

Art Carlson, professional photographer, drove the 1500 mile Alaskan Highway as part of a 5 month, 18,000 mile journey. The highway began as a one-lane supply line at the outbreak of World War II and today runs from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Fairbanks, Alaska passing by crystal-clear, glacier-fed lakes, snow-clad mountain ranges, and an assortment of wildlife. Don’t miss this opportunity to see some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Regional refreshments will be on hand.

The presentation will be held at the Mary Jacobs Library on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:30 pm. Please pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 ext 4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org. Future Armchair Traveler talks will include trips to Manchu Picchu, Thailand, and Bhutan.
